Essential oils for migraine are indeed essential to optimize your Valentine’s Day, which is right around the corner. No one wants to hear “Not tonight, dear, I have a headache”, especially on the most romantic day of the year. Essential oils for migraine are an organic, gentle way to prevent and alleviate this painful condition.

When you’re thinking of steamy romance, Patchouli Essential Oil may come to mind for February 14. But not if you’ve got a migraine.

According to master aromatherapist Kathi Keville, Editor of the American Herb Association Quarterly newsletter, essential oil treatments for the hands as well as the head may help. Surprisingly, raising the temperature of the hands 15 degrees F by soaking them in warm water seems to short-circuit a vascular headache like a migraine by regulating circulation.

Anyone who has experienced a migraine knows that it differs from other kinds of headaches. Migraines affect vision, balance and other perceptions, and sufferers may experience nausea, disorientation and anxiety in addition to simple pain in the temples and other areas of the head and neck. Specific sensory signals, such as light and vibrations, may trigger a migraine.

it’s important to remember that when using essential oils for migraine, quality of the oils used really counts. Don’t cheap out. Invest in 100% USDA certified organic essential oils.

Here are two ways to try essential oils for migraine:

1 cup cold water (add ice cubes!)

5 drops Lavender or Eucalyptus essential oil

Add oil to cold water, soak a soft, clean towel in the mixture, and wring out thoroughly. Ideally in a darkened room, lie down on your back and drape the cold cloth over your eyes and forehead. Refresh the cloth when it becomes room-temperature or dry.

Heat one quart of purified water to about 110 degrees F. Add 5 drops of essential oil of Ginger, 5 drops of essential oil of Lavender. Soak both hands for 3 – 5 minutes. Repeat.
